1884 John Morrissey
Consumption (tuberculosis) took him at 28. He had played briefly for Buffalo in 1881. “Other Folks and Their Affairs,” Green Bay State Gazette, May 2, 1884: 4.
1888 Charlie Ferguson
The Philadelphia pitcher had caught malaria three weeks earlier that became typhoid fever soon after. Born in Charlottesville, VA, he went to Penn. He pitched in the minors in Richmond, then joined the Philadelphia Athletics in 1884. In addition to winning 99 of 163 decisions, he was a solid hitter and decent fielder at second base and other positions. He left behind a wife, but their first child died in infancy.
