Happy Birthday, Ed Ford!

Ed Ford played two games for the Richmond Virginias, a team that took over for Washington in the American Association after that franchise folded in August of 1884.  Ford started that year as a reserve with the Philadelphia club, but soon played with the semi-pro Richmond Virginias in Richmond that year – as he had in previous seasons.  Needing an extra player for a series against Louisville, Ford played a busy game at first base on October 9 (thirteen putouts and three assists) and an error prone game at shortstop on October 10 – five assists and four errors – requiring his being replaced at some point during the game.  Ford went hitless in five at bats as a temporary major leaguer.

Edgar Lee Ford was born April 10 1862 to William and Emma Jeannetta (Fletcher) Ford, the second of fourteen (!) children. William was an excavator while Emma was a busy homemaker.  Along the way, his family nicknamed Edgar “Budley.” His sister recounted this in a memorial poem published six months after his death. A Richmond, Virginia resident for life, Ford married twice – his first wife, Maggie Pollard Mitchell, died at 35 years old in 1903, just three years after they were married.  He married Mary Maud Moncure in 1905.  Neither marriage produced children.

After his baseball days, Ford was a succesful contractor; among the contracts I saw he handled included street repairs in Richmond.

On June 8, 1931, after about five months of illness related to heart disease, Ford had a fatal heart attack and passed to the next league, leaving behind his wife and four siblings. He is buried in Riverview Cemetery in Richmond.
