What’s new? Gerrit Cole opts out of his Yankees deal (but…)

But the Yankees can keep Cole by adding one more year to his current contract at $36 million for that year (which is 2029). I’d rather have Cole than the free agents that are out there, but he’s 34 now and he will turn 39 as the old contract ends with the added year. And, for the first time, he suffered through some injuries at the beginning of the 2024 season. So – it’s really more like $180 million for maybe three good seasons of starts and the rest is anyone’s guess. That’s why I’m not a GM.
