OBITUARIES:
1899 Harry Dooms
Dooms had a one-game tryout with Louisville in 1892, but had been a pitcher throughout his minor league and semi-pro life as well as a fine hitting outfielder when switched out as pitchers were then.
“Harry Dooms, who was frequently employed by the Freeport base ball club as an umpire, died recently in St. Louis. Harry was, a decade ago, one of the best minor league pitchers in the business, but becoming addicted to the use of intoxicants he gradually failed and finally died, broken in health and penniless.”
“Death of Harry Dooms,” Freeport (IL) Daily Journal, December 30, 1899: 5.
There were notes of Dooms’ death two weeks after he died, but no obits of note when he died.
