Baseball History for November 22nd

<— NOV 21 NOV 23 —>

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1852 George Taylor

Taylor makes this list because he is listed as the manager of Brooklyn’s 1884 entry in the American Association, finishing ninth in a ten-team league with a 40-64-5 record. In truth, he wasn’t the field manager but rather the business manager. In 1883 the team operated as the Brooklyn Grays, but not as a major league franchise. It was the first season for a Brooklyn franchise in a major league since the Hartfords of Brooklyn were members of the National League in 1877. Taylor eventually turned over management of the franchise to owner Charles Byrne in 1885. In a few years that franchise became a champion under Bill McGunnigle’s on field managing – then jumped from the Association to the National League in 1890. (Yep – the Dodgers franchise originally played in the American Association.)

Getting back to Taylor… After graduating from St. Francis Xavier with a Master of Arts, he became a member of the New York press. Most of his life was spent in the newspaper business, where he was the longtime news editor of the New York Herald for more than three decades. He died on October 28, 1911 in his hometown of New York.

“George J. Taylor,” New York Times, October 29, 1911: 15.
